"All the Lovers" is a song by Australian recording artist Kylie Minogue. It is the first single from her eleventh studio album, Aphrodite. "All the Lovers" was written by English electropop duo Kish Mauve and was one of the last songs to be recorded for the album. Minogue chose the song as the first single since she felt it was reflective of the euphoric mood of Aphrodite. "All the Lovers" is a midtempo electropop song with prominent synthesizers, that has been compared to Minogue's 2004 single "I Believe in You". Its lyrics are an invitation to the dancefloor, while comparing previous relationships to one's current lover. "All the Lovers" was positively received by contemporary critics, who praised its dance anthem nature and deemed it as a classic Minogue single.

The song became a commercial success particularly in Europe, reaching the top ten in countries such as Belgium, Germany, Ireland and Italy, and peaking inside the top five in France, Slovakia and the United Kingdom. The accompanying music video was inspired by the installations of Spencer Tunick, and portrays Minogue on top of a flash mob of people wearing white underwear, surrounded by different white floating objects. Minogue explained that the video was an expression of her view on sexuality and sensuality. It received positive reviews, with critics complimenting its aesthetic and imagery. "All the Lovers" has been performed by Minogue in a number of live appearances, including the fifth's season finale of Germany's Next Topmodel.

Background

On 20 April 2010, Minogue announced on her official website the release of her single "All the Lovers", followed by her eleventh studio album Aphrodite in July 2010. She also revealed the cover art for the album, as well as a 30-second instrumental clip of the track.[1] The number of visitors caused the site to temporarily crash; it was back shortly after.[2] "All the Lovers" was one of the last tracks from Aphrodite to be recorded.[3] The song was written by Jim Eliot and Mima Stilwell from British electropop group Kish Mauve and produced by Eliot and Stuart Price.[4] Minogue commented, "As I was recording it I knew that 'All the Lovers' had to be the first single; it sums up the euphoria of the album perfectly. It gives me goose-bumps, so I'm really excited to hear what everyone thinks of it." [1] On 14 May 2010, "All the Lovers" premiered at British station BBC Radio 1.[5] After the release the song and announcement of her world tour, Minogue said that "The vibe that I’ve put out there with 'All The Lovers', and that I’m getting back, is 'feel love, share love'. That’s what I want the show to be."[6]

Composition

"All the Lovers" is a midetempo electropop song that runs through a dance-oriented beat.[7][8] According to the sheet music published at Musicnotes.com by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, the song is written in the key of C major.[9] The song's beat is set in common time, and moves at a tempo of 142 beats per minute.[9] It has the sequence of Gsus4–G–F6–Fmaj7 as its chord progression. Minogue's vocals span from the note of G3 to the note of A4.[9] Adam Markovitz of Entertainment Weekly noted that, musically, the track is comparable to "the earnest dreampop of 2004's 'I Believe in You', right down to their copycat basslines".[10] "All the Lovers" is slow-building on its verses and adds layers of subtle electronic instrumentation throughout.[11] The chorus has a strong synth line that according to Markovitz, "would’ve been the perfect main-menu soundtrack for an Atari game of Studio 54".[7][10] After the second chorus, Minogue's breathy vocals are backed solely by piano and string arrangements. The bridge has been compared to the music of New Order's 1983 single "Blue Monday".[7] The track ends with a repeated chorus.[7] Lyrically, "All the Lovers" appears to be an invitation to the dancefloor, while comparing previous relationships to one's current lover in lines such as "All the lovers that have gone before / they don't compare to you."[8][10][12]

Critical reception

Nick Levine of Digital Spy gave the song five stars and described it as a "a classy, danceable and effortlessly elegant electro-disco-pop tune - in other words, A Proper Kylie Single" and added that the chorus "is instantly infectious in a 'put your arms in the air like you just don't care' kinda way."[7][8] A reviewer from Popjustice commented, "As well as being the sound of dancefloor stampedes from now until the end of time 'All the Lovers' is also the sound of a million Kylie fans breathing a collective sigh of relief. It's grown up but carefree, bombastic yet delicate, sober in spirit and drunk on love. [...] It is very hard not to listen to this song on repeat."[13] Adam Markovitz of Entertainment Weekly said "All the Lovers" will likely reach "near-ubiquity in gyms, gay clubs, and clothing stores" and added "The dance floor can wait; we’re too busy enjoying this to get up right now."[10] Yahoo! Music UK stated that "Things look very different on Planet Pop since Kylie Minogue last strutted about the place, but 'All the Lovers' has just the right mix of glitterball style and '80s synth euphoria to suggest Lady Gaga's world domination is very far from a done deal."[14] The Irish Times commented "More in the vein of 'The One' and 'I Believe in You' than, say, 'Spinning Around', 'All the Lovers' shows Kylie in tip-top form."[15] Chris Ryan from MTV said, "'All the Lovers' is classic Kylie".[11]

Nui Te Koha of the Herald Sun called it "epic in every sense [...] It packs what's missing most in today's dance-pop wannabes – restraint."[16] Mark Sutherland of Billboard said, "'Lovers' has the aura of one of 'those' Minogue songs-the once-every-few-years anthems, like "Spinning Around" or 'Can't Get You Out of My Head'-that come along, re-engage her original fan base and bring in the next generation."[17] Gavin Martin of the Daily Mirror complimented the vocals and added that "The Minogue brand is given added gold lining and more power to Kylie's celebrity elbow is assured."[12] Nicola Meighan of The List named "All the Lovers" "dance-inducing call-to-arms, a winning sing-a-long disco serenade."[18] Rob Harvilla of The Village Voice called it "A pleasingly vapid synth-cheese jam. [...] Kylie's at her best with just a slight element of menace/sleaze ("2 Hearts," [sic] say), and this don't exactly qualify, but if you're 55 minutes into a spin class this'll still push you toward the summit."[19]

Chart performance

On 26 June 2010, "All the Lovers" debuted at the U.S. Billboard's Dance/Club Play Songs at number thirty-one. The following week, it climbed at number twenty-two and peaked at number one on 5 August.[20] It debuted at the Canadian Hot 100 at number seventy-two.[20] On 21 June 2010, "All the Lovers" debuted at number fourteen in Australia on the ARIA Charts and eventually peaked at number thirteen,[21] In the United Kingdom, the song charted within the top 5 on the UK Singles Chart at number 4 on its first week.[22] During the first half of the week, the song sold over 18,500 copies in Great Britain.[23] Two weeks later "All the Lovers" reached number three. However, it has subsequently been noted that had the song's physical release been timed simultaneously with the digital download, the song would most likely have reached number one.

On 18 June 2010, "All the Lovers" debuted at number six on the Irish Singles Chart.[24] "All the Lovers" has also charted inside the top ten of Austria and Czech Republic, the top forty in Belgium (Flanders and Wallonia), Spain and Sweden.[25] "All the Lovers" lingered for a second week in the top 10 of the European Hot 100 chart thanks especially to its success in the United Kingdom and Italy.[26] It also peaked in New Zealand at number 10, for one week in the charts, after falling out.

Music video

Development and synopsis

The music video for "All the Lovers" was filmed on 8 May and 9 May 2010 in downtown Los Angeles, California. It was directed by Joseph Kahn, who was reportedly chosen by Minogue since he could give the video a fresh, new feel.[27] The concept is a re-imagination of works by American artist Spencer Tunick, known for his installations that feature large numbers of nude people. Kahn and Minogue created two treatments for the video, but chose the edgier option.[28] She originally wanted to wear sombre clothes for the shoots, but Kahn insisted on a smaller white outfit.[29] Minogue wears jewelry from designer Shaun Leane.[30] The video begins with a flash mob of people dropping items with QR Code on them. Although the code isn't directly scannable from the video, a blogger has reconstructed the code to reveal that it says "LOVE." They then start kissing while taking their clothes off in an empty street. They gather on the middle in their white underwear, where Minogue appears surrounded by doves, wearing a white cobweb-style t-shirt over a black bra and knickers, with matching white thigh high boots.[27][31] The flash mob becomes bigger as the video continues. During the song's bridge, a white horse gallops between couples kissing. The buildings are surrounded by floating marshmallows as well as a giant inflatable elephant.[32] The video was noted by some critics for featuring a number of same-sex couples, which Minogue explained paid homage to her gay audience who helped propel her initial success.[33] Minogue said of the music video after its release,

"People go nuts over it, so that’s amazing. [Kahn] came up with a brilliant, simple idea and executed it so sensitively, I thought. It’s still cutting edge, it still gets you a little hot under the collar, but I think there’s a real sensitivity. It’s what I’m about and what I love. [...] What I'm so thrilled about is the energy that comes through and that oneness. [...] It is a perfect and genuine expression of how I feel about sexuality and sensuality. I totally believe love should be for love's sake."[34][35][36]

Reception

Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly called it "a striptease-in-the-streets party of epic (and epically horny) proportions" and added, "the result is best described as either a makeout flash mob, a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade gone wild, or some serious 'the touch, the feel of cotton' guerrilla marketing."[32] Kurt B. Reighley of Queer Sight commented, "Yet for all the sexy filling the screen, the video never seems dirty or vulgar, because director Joseph Kahn punctuates it with wholesome images of everything white imaginable [...] The choreography, while incredibly simple, is much more powerful than Laurie Ann Gibson's clunky footwork for Lady Gaga's "Alejandro" clip, and Kylie's stylists continue to refine an image that suggests nothing so much as Sanrio Toys (the makers of Hello Kitty) vision of Charlie's Angels."[37] Ryan Brockington of the New York Post said, "Taking a cue from videos by Matt & Kim, Make the Girl Dance and nakedly nasty Erykah Badu most recently, Kylie has decided to commercialize on the attention a clothes-free video conjures up. But the only thing is 'Kylie's' Lovers' is a little more ... commercial. [...] I'm just [saying] it's not as 'umphy' as its ancestors."[38] Nick Levine of Digital Spy commented, "There aren't many popstars who could make a video featuring doves, balloons, a galloping horse, a giant inflatable elephant and a mass grope-fest in the middle of LA.... and get away with it. Then again, there aren't many popstars who engender the collective affection that Kylie Minogue does."[8]

Armond White of New York Press praised the video extensively, stating:

Kahn fantasizes a street scene—what in the ’60s was called a “happening”— where Kylie’s diva entreaty rounds up multicultural, ambisexual legions to join her individual ecstasy. It’s not a riot, not an orgy, it’s an uprising as the swaying lovers amass and their joy takes them literally higher and higher. Kahn erects a tower of humanity amidst gleaming skyscrapers of urban progress; his imagination carries the history of Stonewall and how what began as a protest march has become a celebration [...] Kahn’s leap towards universality does not neglect the reality that gay society’s class, race, size, image and age biases are undeniable (and in fact limit the perspective of even wellmeaning documentarians). Kahn’s floating marshmallows, balloons and white stallions do not make up for the inequities of gay socialization; rather, they anthropomorphize Kahn and Kylie’s idea of purity. Better than the gay exploitation of Sex and the City 2, Kahn’s video transforms those urban spaces—“All the dirty, despicable places” as a Stonewall Uprising witness recalls—where gays once were marginalized, pushed to express their sexual needs in the squalid Meatpacking district (now cleaned-up) or the Stonewall Inn itself (which one witness called “a toilet, but it was a temporary refuge from the street”). Kahn’s gleaming fantasy of paradisiacal urban cleanliness is a creative act that idealizes an historical fact. Like Spencer Tunick, who photographs mass public undressings, Kahn and Kylie emcee a multiracial party; as critic John Demetry points out, restricting participants to the young, pretty, physically fit is part of their idealization. Importantly, Kahn and Kylie serenade their partiers by the Stonewall-era term “lovers” (out-moded by today’s “partner”).[39]

It is Minogue's most watched film and her first solo single to have over 10 million views since 2008's "In My Arms" (her single with Taio Cruz is her highest overall.)[40]

Live performances

Her first official performance of "All the Lovers" was on 29 May 2010 at the Wind Music Awards in Verona, Italy. Minogue wore an Aphrodite-inspired outfit, with a white-toga dress and gold heels.[41] On 5 June 2010, Minogue unveiled a megamix of her album at nightclub Splash in New York City. During "All the Lovers", she improvised and started singing along to the track. She explained, "I'm elevated, I have a microphone, so of course I'm going to sing along."[17] She also performed the song at the season finale of reality show Germany's Next Topmodel on 9 June 2010. The performance was an emulation of the music video, and Minogue wore a blue print dress and creme high-knee boots.[42] Georgina Littlejohn of the Daily Mail said that "she certainly showed how it was done to her younger pop counterpart Katy Perry, who was also on [the] night's line-up".[42] Ann Lee of Metro called the performance "storming" and added that "[she] gave Katy Perry a run for her money".[43]

"All the Lovers" was also performed along with "Can't Get You Out of My Head" at M6 Music Live Event in Paris, France, where Minogue wore a blue slashed dress.[44] She also performed the song along with "Love at First Sight" on British chat show Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, in an episode aired on 25 June 2010. She wore a short silver dress with a black gown over from Balmain.[45][46] Minogue also performed "All the Lovers" at the gay pride parade in Madrid, Spain on 3 July 2010, and on Australian variety show Hey Hey It's Saturday on 21 July 2010.[47][48] She performed the song along with "Get Outta My Way" at Miss Italy on 12 September 2010. Minogue also performed the song as a duet with the British boyband JLS for their Christmas special on ITV1 on 11 December 2010, which was shown before the final of that year's series of The X Factor.

Scissor Sisters cover

"All the Lovers" was covered by American band Scissor Sisters at BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge. They performed a country version of the song, using instruments such as the slide guitar.[49]
